Band D council tax to rise by 4.7%
This has caused controversy, as the increase is more than twice that of the rate of inflation. It is also the fourth year in a row that council tax rates have risen above inflation, with the rate going up by 5.1% in 2018/19 and by 4% in 2017/18.
Band D houses will see their council tax rise from £1,671 to £1,750 this year. It is thought this is due to the Treasury’s decision to give local authorities the ability to charge a social care precept of up to 2% of the total council tax bill back in 2015.
